INS agrees to media committee

MUMBAI: A proposal to set up a joint consultative committee to resolve the differences among three wings of the communication industry - the media, advertising agencies and the advertisers - has been endorsed by the participants of a one-day seminar of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) in Mumbai on Thursday.

Japanese loan

NEW DELHI: Japan today announced a long-term loan of 132.7 billion yen (about Rs 4,000 crore) to India for infrastructure development for 1997 under its Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (OECF). The announcement was made by visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Yukihiko Ikeda during his talks with Finance Minister P Chidambaram here this afternoon.

Life threat

SHILLONG: Attempts were made on the life of Justice A P Singh of the Shillong Bench of the Guwahati High Court on two different occasions on Wednesday by unidentified gunmen. The gunmen fired at Justice Singh first when he was inside his office chamber and then at his residence late in the night yesterday, police sources said. However, on both the occasions the bullets missed the target.
