PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

BEIJING, July 24: China has conducted its biggest military exercise in 33 years, with the People's Liberation Army's East China sea fleet testing missiles and other hi-tech weapons successfully north of Taiwan, according to reports. This was the biggest naval military techniques' exercise since the all-forces exercise of 1964. It took place between July 10 and July 20, according to China news service.`New records were set in many categories, indicating that the East Sea fleet has improved its ability to master modern weapons and equipment,' it said. The 10-day drills, which ended on Sunday, involved over 100 models of warships with the PLA navy.``Naval warfare theories, skills to launch guided missiles and underwater missile-containment weapons were also examined,'' the report said.Analysts said the exercises were held amid escalating territorial disputes, especially with Taiwan, which went on full alert following Beijing's exercises.
