Mumbai Notes -- Rs 92.89 lakh in fines

MUMBAI, July 24: The cleanliness drive undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Jan 1 has so far recovered Rs 92.89 lakh from 2.97 lakh cases. The civic administration has recovered Rs 13.79 lakh as administrative charges from 85,247 cases in all wards under the cleanliness drive during June 1997. A BMC release informed that the performance of H West ward -- which recovered Rs 1.41 lakh from 5029 cases -- was good compared to other wards. New captain Captain Subodh Mittal took over as the Commanding Officer of INS Kunjali at an impressive parade held at the naval base in Colaba on Thursday. He succeeds Commodore A H Chitnis who assumes command of the fleet tanker INS Jyoti. Commissioned in 1974, Captain Mittal is a pilot with over 3000 hours of operational flying. He has commanded the missile boat Nirbhik, offshore patrol vessel Varuna and the frontline INAS 330 air squadron. He was last appointed as Captain (Air) at Kunjali, and played a significant role in the search and rescue operations conducted by the western naval command in rescuing lives of nine survivors of the Arcadia pride merchant vessel tragedy. INS Kunjali which completed 43 years of service on July 1 this year is the premier helibase of the western naval command from where it operates a variety of sophisticated flying machines. CR disruption Suburban services on the Central Railway were disrupted for over an hour on Thursday evening following a loco failure at Vikhroli. According to sources, a Kalyan bound local suffered from a loco failure at Vikhroli at 6.15 pm. The snag was repaired only at 7 pm, leading to a delay in the services on the fast track.
