Empty rhetoric -- Fighting corruption is easier said than done

As the cancerous growth of corruption is what agitates people most, it was quite natural for both President K.R. Narayanan and Prime Minister I.K Gujral to lay considerable emphasis on rooting it out in their Independence Day speeches.

Election or new coalition? -- Congress holds all the cards

Here, on the one hand, is a Prime Minister so much the yes-man that he gives rubber-stamps an inferiority complex. Inder Kumar Gujral is willing to stomach any insult -- even barracking on the floor of the House from his own party president -- if he can stick to his post.

Democracy vs good governance

The IMF has recently accepted `good governance' as one of the criteria for eligibility of loans. A loan to Argentina was put on hold on these grounds. The World Bank too in its latest World Development Report has stressed that good governance is a prerequisite for growth.
