The unholy nexus

The Election Commission's resolve to ensure that no law-breaker becomes a law-maker is laudable. But it is doubtful if our law-makers possess the political will to achieve this lofty objective. Almost all political parties have stressed the need for more stringent laws to prevent the entry of criminals to the Central and state legislatures.

Dramatic but inadequate

The second mafia killing of a big businessman in Mumbai within a week has created considerable public concern about the state of law and order in the Mumbai. A well-executed strike in the state capital's prime commercial and high-security government district is bound to revive memories of the conditions prevailing in the city in 1993.

Look west through the east

The recent visits of the Japanese delegation and the Vice-Chief of the US armed forces to India have opened up, for the first time, the possibility of getting a toehold in the western alliance and moving away from the old Soviet arrangement which has kept India bottled up for four decades.
