A record of inadequacy

Beyond the objective fact that the Tatas withheld information on their accused executive, Dr Brojen Gogoi, the Tata tapes also contain a larger message. They are a compelling testament to the extent to which the power structure of India has been perverted.

After getting off to a promising start, the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has hit a steep roadblock which threatens to undermine it before it has had a chance to establish itself as the unquestionable arbiter of telecoms liberalisation. This is a terrible pity, especially as the TRAI is the first in the line of planned regulatory authorities.

Don't blame democracy

Indian society and especially its politics are in a sorry state. The rampant corruption, mediocrity, indiscipline, inefficiency and lack of foresight of its central institutions make them incapable of attending to the well-being of citizens.
