Khushwant Singh throws weight behind pro-helmet lobby

The anti-helmet lobby suffered a setback yesterday when veteran journalist Khushwant Singh summarily dismissed the need for exempting Sikh women from wearing protective headgear. Challenging the protesting Sikh organisations to come forward with any Sikh scripture prohibiting women from wearing helmets, he said, "the High Court has taken a correct decision by making it mandatory for pillion riders of two-wheeler to wear helmets. It is purely a secular decision."

Way to go: One more route for Amarnath

To ease the rush on the Pahalgam route to the holy cave of Amarnath, the Delhi High Court yesterday asked the Jammu and Kashmir Government to open the Baltal route from Srinagar for pilgrims every year. A division bench comprising Justice Mahinder Narain and Justice S K Mahajan made this order while disposing three petitions challenging the State Government's decision to impose certain restriction to reduce the number of pilgrims visiting the cave this year.

Proving from the grave

A Paris appeal court on November 6 ordered the body of legendary French singer-actor Yves Montand to be exhumed for genetic tests to decide a paternity lawsuit. Aurore Drossard claims that Montand, who had an affair with Marilyn Monroe and was married to French Oscar-winner Simone Signoret, was her father.
