VIP security to be slashed by one-fourth

[Details] The Union home ministry has decided to cut down the security cover for VIPs by one-fourth. The decision has to be cleared by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). If clearance is granted, nearly 1,000 of the 5,000-odd personnel deployed to protect VIPs will be relieved. Moreover, the Centre will save about Rs 15 crore annually on VIP security.

SC raps trial court for convicting Rai

[Details] The Supreme Court has sharply criticised the reasoning of the designated trial court in holding former Union minister Kalpnath Rai guilty of harbouring terrorists alleged to have been involved in the 1992 JJ Hospital shoot-out case. In its 47-page judgement acquitting the former Union minister and five others under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA), the judges held that there was no "shred of evidence that Kalpnath Rai knew that the said person was a terrorist".

Khaplang group may agree to cease-fire

[Details] The Centre's peace efforts in Nagaland seem to have received a boost with the reluctant Khaplang faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) indicating that it might agree to the cease-fire in the state and begin a political dialogue with the Government. Home Ministry sources said the NSCN (Khaplang) had indicated its willingness to join the NSCN (Isak-Muivah) in the cease-fire with the security forces if certain conditions put forward by it were met.
