Parties concur on continuing special J&K status

NEW DELHI, Nov 9: A key member of the Jammu and Kashmir autonomy committee today claimed that major political parties have reiterated their stand on continuation of article 370 under which state enjoys a special status. P L Handoo the said member of the panel, which concluded its discussions with leaders of different political parties in the capital, said that ruling National Conference's stand on ``erosion and restoration of autonomy'' has been generally appreciated by everybody. The discussions remained inconclusive and will be resumed on November 24, a State Government spokesman said. A five member delegation, headed by State Revenue Minister Abdul Ahad, of the committee which is on a four day visit to the capital held discussions with central leaders, MPs, jurists and other intellectuals. The delegation also met Congress president Sitaram Kesri last night and explained to him State Government's views on the erosion of State's autonomy over the years. Before flying back to Jammu this morning members of the panel met Defence Minister Mulayam Singh. The committee members, during their four-day stay here, met the Janata Dal president, Sharad Yadav who, according to Handoo, assured them that his party would like to see the fulfillment of promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The CPI too reiterated its commitment to ensure retention of Article 370. The CPI view was conveyed to the committee by the party's three-member deputation, headed by D Raja, Handoo said. The panel also held discussions on the issue with Justice V M Tarkunde, Syed Shahabuddin, former MP and CPM secretary, H S Surjeet.
