Congress threat again to review support to Front

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

GUWAHATI, November 12: The Congress today made it clear that it would reconsider its support to the United Front Government if it failed to table the Jain commission report on the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination on the opening day of the winter session of Parliament on November 19.

Congress president Sitaram Kesri, while addressing a massive rally at Guwahati, gave this warning and said the government must at any cost table the report on that day and the party was not going to leave the matter so easily.

Kesri's words were also echoed by party vice-president Jitendra Prasada, who said Home Minister Gupta was trying to dilly-dally with the tabling of the report, which the Congress would not tolerate.

``The Congress cannot compromise on the issue of assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. We want to know the truth, and there cannot be any delay,'' Prasada said.

Prasada also called Indrajit Gupta unfit for continuing as the country's Home Minister, and urged Kesri to talk to the Prime Minister about Gupta finding excuses for not placing the Jain report in the Parliament.

In Delhi, Congress parliamentary party deputy leader in the Lok Sabha G Venkat Swamy wrote a letter to Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral asking him to table the report as assured earlier by Home Minister Indrajit Gupta.

Addressing a news conference at the AICC headquarters Venkat Swamy said Home Minister Indrajit Gupta has hurt the sentiments of the Congress and the people of the country by questioning the findings of the Jain Commission.

In Guwahati, Kesri dedicated most part of his 30-minute speech to castigating the United Front partners, particularly the Left parties and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He said Congress would fight all these parties more strongly from now onwards.

Today's rally was hardly dedicated to the golden jubilee of India's Independence except for felicitating some freedom fighters. It turned out to be the launching of a Congress campaign to oust the AGP-led Government in Assam, with Kesri and other senior party leaders lambasting Mahanta.

Jain panel proofs

The Union home ministry on Wednesday received 100 pages of in-camera deposition from the Jain Commission following a written request by the Ministry's Joint Secretary (Security) Vinay Kumar.

Out of these, sources in the Commission claim, 40 deal with the deposition of former prime minister V P Singh before the commission. These form part of what these sources claim is the ``evidence'' which Home Minister Indrajit Gupta has asked for.
