Sampras shuts out Kafelnikov

[Details] Pete Sampras captured the ATP Tour World championship for the fourth time, outclassing Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in an one-sided final yesterday. Sampras had a shaky start but he quickly picked up his game and simply overpowered Kafelnikov with a full range of shots.

Italy through to finals

[Details] Italy, Croatia, Yugoslavia and Belgium became the last of 15 European nations to qualify for next year's World Cup finals after second legs of their play-off matches. Italy, the 1994 runners-up to Brazil, went through thanks to a 1-0 victory over Russia.

ATP seeks to simplify ranking system

[Details] The tennis tour is planning major changes from the year 2000 that will simplify the ranking system, cut the number of top events and possibly bring together men's and women's tournaments. The season-ending world championship is expected to rotate around the world. The restructuring will also reduce the number of top-tier tournaments now known as super nine to seven.
