Another jolt for Sharif from Supreme Court

[Details] An embattled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday got a new jolt when the Pakistan Supreme Court admitted a petition challenging a constitutional amendment brought in by his government, which stripped the President of his powers to dismiss a government. However, Sharif got some relief as the court postponed the contempt case, in which he appeared in person twice this week, till November 28.

BSP rebels get more time to fend off Mayawati plea

[Details] Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kesari Nath Tripathi on Friday granted five days' time to rebel Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs for filing a reply to Mayawati's petitions seeking their disqualification. All the 12 rebels -- accompanied by three counsels -- appeared in person before the Speaker to urge that as they had got copies of the notice, seeking their reply, only on Thursday, they should be given more time to file their reply.

DoT may appoint ombudsman

[Details] The Social Audit Panel for the Ministry of Communications which was set up to oversee consumer interests in the field of telecommunication services has been dismantled. The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Telecom Commission. The ministry is now planning to have an alternative "watch dog" mechanism through appointment of a "ombudsman," along the lines existing in the banking sector.
