CJ tells Leghari to file plea against SC judge Siddiqui

[Details] The constitutional crisis in Pakistan deepened yesterday with Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah asking President Farooq Leghari to file a reference petition against the Justice Saiduzzaman Siddiqui before the Supreme Judicial Council. The beleaguered CJ said that Justice Siddiqui exceeded his jurisdiction in passing an administrative order to take control of the apex court. He said Justice Siddiqui and the two other judges called a full court meeting without any legal authorisation from him.

Iraq lets oil-food plan slip

[Details] Baghdad's reported decision to end the "Oil for Food" programme is causing deep concern at the United Nations especially in view of surveys showing that hundreds of thousands Iraqi children are suffering from malnutrition. The UN wants to allow Iraq to sell a larger quantity of oil to enable it to buy more food and medicines which are in short supply following seven years of crippling economic sanctions.

Shravan retracts statement in Gulshan case

[Details] Shravan Rathod, of the Nadeem-Shravan duo, has retracted his earlier statements made to the Mumbai Police in the Gulshan Kumar murder case. Fear of reprisals from Dubai-based gangsters appears to be behind the withdrawal and changes in his earlier statement that led to the building up of a case against Nadeem, who is facing an extradition suit in Britain for his alleged involvement in the murder.
