One hundred and fifty years after its inception, the University of Roorkee -- the British empire's first technical institution -- is facing the spectre of obsolescence. The university's sesquicentennial celebrations which concluded last fortnight were tinged with a mood of pessimism the decay of the institution that planned the country's enormous network of waterways, dams and railways was evident.

A GIST mission to help savour Indian byte

The Graphics and Intelligence Based Script Technology (GIST), a language technology mission of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Pune, has decided to launch a nationwide awareness campaign to promote the use of computers in Indian languages. The campaign will begin on December 17 in Bangalore with the launch of Kannada Authorised Training Centres (ATCs).
