Govt accepts Vittal report, PSU guidelines cut

[Details] Union industry minister Murasoli Maran yesterday announced today that the Government had substantially accepted the Vittal Committee report which had recommended that the numerous administrative guidelines that govern the life of public sector units be reduced. As many as 696 regulations out of the total 892 have have been deleted and only 196 have been retained.

Joshi loses his cool, turns the heat on State bureaucrats

[Details] It could be the frustration of seeing his government's pet schemes coming to naught and a politician's uncanny knack of finding scapegoats for failures. It could also be a genuine attempt of a leader to make the steel frame more pliable. Whatever his intentions, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi lost his cool at Sunday's high level meeting with bureaucrats who in turn blamed sacrosanct procedures for a particular mix-up.

Hijacked Russian plane seized

[Details] An armed hijacker demanding 10 million dollars seized a plane carrying at least 140 people en route to Moscow yesterday, but was seized in a massive security operation at the airport in Moscow soon after the aircraft's arrival. The plane, belonging to an obscure airline called Rossia State Transportation Co., was commandeered en route from Magadan in far eastern Russia.
