  Ticket for a UP ride: Sonia likely to figure in poll list
Sonia Gandhi's name is likely to figure in the list of Lok Sabha candidates to be submitted by Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president ND Tiwari over the next two days to the party high command. Tiwari is likely to propose only Sonia's name for two Lok Sabha constituencies in the State, Rae Bareli and Amethi, both represented by members of the Nehru family in the past.
  Troops storm jail, free hostages
Riot troops stormed a Brazilian prison where inmates were holding hundreds of hostages, quickly ending a three-day rebellion apparently without firing a shot. As some 250 riot police took control of Sorocaba prison, hostages streamed out the front gate, screaming and crying. Some said police had beaten them and the inmates.

Thackeray takes on EC once again
Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray has once again changed his stance vis-a-vis his party constitution and thrown the Election Commission a challenge to do its worst with regard to his life-term leadership of his party. "I will never stand down as party president." Thackeray said.
Empty coffers makes Mamata run to BJP
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee yesterday confirmed that party leaders were carrying out "informal talks" with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a tie-up for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. The possible tie-up with the BJP is necessitated more by the near-empty coffers than for any other reason, ideological or otherwise.

Govt's new year sans cabinet secy
The Union government began the new year without a Cabinet Secretary as the Central Administrative Tribunal yesterday restrained T S R Subramanian from attending office. A two-member division bench of the Tribunal also reserved judgment on the Government's appeal seeking vacation of the stay ordered yesterday on Subramanian's extension.
Algerian death toll rises to 78
Seventy-eight civilians were killed and 68 others wounded in attacks against villagers in western Algeria at the start of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan. Twenty-one civilians were killed and 20 others wounded overnight on Tuesday in the first attack on Ouled Kherarba and 29 villagers were slain and 21 wounded.
