  EC to focus on VIP constituencies
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) M S Gill today said that the Election Commission (EC) would provide a level playing field for all contestants. This is to ensure that ruling parties did not have an undue advantage over other political parties in the coming Lok Sabha elections. He also promised to keep special tabs on VIP constituencies throughout the country.
  Sathe joins chorus for replacing Kesri with Sonia
The growing clout of Sonia Gandhi in Congress affairs, and the resulting marginalisation of party president Sitaram Kesri, was reflected in three developments yesterday. Two party leaders separately called for Sonia to replace Kesri as president and a delegation submitted a memorandum to Sonia asking that P V Narasimha Rao be denied a ticket this time.

Mulayam in the race for PM
The country may get a new prime minister, if hopes of the Samajwadi Party president and Defence Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav are fulfilled. Yadav said he would be in the race for prime minister-ship if his party managed to secure 70 seats in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Anand downs Karpov in Game Six
Viswanathan Anand of India threw caution to the winds and pulled off a spectacular win in the sixth game against Anatoly Karpov of Russia and drew the World Chess Championship title series at 3-3 yesterday. As the series remained tied, the title will now be decided in the tiebreaker series to be played today.

Lankan Govt ultimatum to Oppn on peace plan
The Sri Lankan government has given an ultimatum to the Opposition United National Party (UNP) to make their suggestions on devolution of power to the Tamil community by the end of January or prepare for a referendum. The government had in October presented a set of proposals to Parliament for devolving power to the Tamil minority but the UNP had expressed strong reservations about it.
Asian stock market crash continues
Asia-Pacific stock markets kept up their new-year plunge on Thursday with no signs of respite from the deepening regional financial crisis. Jakarta plunged 12% to a four-year low, Hong Kong 3% to a two-year low and Singapore 7.1% to levels last seen during the October 1987 crash.
