  EC orders Gujarat to put pvt power deals on hold
The Election Commission has rapped the Gujarat government for its undue haste in finalising private power deals and has directed them to hold these in abeyance. The Commission has advised the Gujarat government to abstain from implementing the resolution of December 22 and asked that the projects be kept in pendency till the elections get over by March 15.

US stocks stumble, oil prices slip down to 29-month low
The recent Asian currency crisis finally seems to be affecting the US markets also. Wall Street stocks slumped on Friday and investors sought safety in bonds. Oil prices fell to their lowest level in 29 months as continued gloom over supply and demand sent prices down. The Dow Jones industrial average also dropped by 222.20 points.
Vice-President's house gets a Rs 1.6 crore renovation
The Vice-President of India, Krishan Kant, may be a Gandhian in principle, but not when it comes to renovating his house. According to the sources in the Urban Development Ministry, the vice-president has incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.6 crore for renovation of his official residence. However, the Secretary to the Vice-President, A N Tiwari has refuted the rumour by stating that the figure quoted for renovation was grossly exaggerated.

Jerusalem tense, full alert sounded
About 250,000 worshippers prayed at Jerusalem's holiest Muslim shrine to mark the second Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan amid heavy Israeli police presence. Hundreds of police officers sealed off streets ringing the old city, where the Al Aqsa mosque is located. Israeli police were on high alert because of renewed warnings that Islamic militants would carry out attacks during Ramadan.
Victory for India, applause for Bangladesh
Mohammed Azharuddin in his second stint as the Indian captain looked relieved at the end of the opening match in the Independence Cup cricket match at National Stadium. While replying to Bangladesh's 190, the Indians created needless tension by losing two early wickets and again a rash of wickets as the target neared. In the end they scraped through with 10 balls and four wickets to spare.
