Cong dumps Rao in first list
Congress Working Committee (CWC) members Sharad Pawar, K Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, Madhav Rao Scindia and Tariq Anwar are among the 87 Congress leaders - all of them MPs in the dissolved Lok Sabha - whom the party today included in its first list of candidates for the forthcoming general elections. However, P V Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister who was elected in 1996 from Behrampur in Orissa, does not figure in the list.

Bodos massacre 17 in Assam
Bodo militants massacred 17 persons, including nine women and a minor girl, and injured five seriously during the harvest festival Bhogali Bihu in lower Assam's Kamrup district late on Tuesday. According to the police about 12 Bodo militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, fired indiscriminately on members of three families living near the Bhutan border.

Dollars dry up as exporters keep away
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may have to effect a volte face on its earlier directive to banks asking them to square up their foreign-exchange positions. The RBI directive has caused a severe liquidity crisis in the forex market. While exporters are holding their proceeds outside, importers are also rushing to cover their unhedged positions, thus creating the crisis in the market.

Tendulkar fury rages at Dhaka
Yesterday was Sachin Tendulkar's day at Dhaka in the first final of the three-nation Independence Cup. An allround display from Tendulkar -- 3 wickets and a quickfire 95 -- helped India to defeat Pakistan by 8 wickets. Pakistan, batting first, made 212 in their alloted quota of overs, a total which paled into insignificance in front of Tendulkar's brilliance.
