  US talks tough: Will tame Iraq alone
The latest stand-off between the United States and Iraq has evoked a highly volatile response from the US. The US has severely castigated Iraq's move stalling the progress of the UN inspection team. The US administration also threatened to use force, if necessary, to make Iraq toe the UN line. This proposal has, however, met opposition from other members of the UN Security Council.
  J&K Govt to load Task Force with weaponry, hi-tech systems
The State Task Force (STF) in Jammu and Kashmir will soon become one of the best equipped forces in India. The government is planning to equip the STF with special scrambler wireless sets and automatic weapons, including rocket launchers and two-inch mortars. The State police has also procured 120 scrambler sets which send messages that cannot be tapped by any other set.

Taliban transport plane crashes with 80 on board
Fate has struck a severe blow to Afghanistan's Taliban militia. On Tuesday, a Taliban transport plane crashed in a remote mountainous area of Pakistan near the Afghan border. There were 80 people on board. Pakistani rescue forces have, however, held no hopes of finding any survivors.
Bodos massacre 17 in Assam
Bodo militants massacred 17 persons, including nine women and a minor girl, and injured five seriously during the harvest festival Bhogali Bihu in lower Assam's Kamrup district late on Tuesday. According to the police about 12 Bodo militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, fired indiscriminately on members of three families living near the Bhutan border.

Suharto refuses to call it a day
Indonesia's president Suharto may have been ruling the country for more than three decades. In recent times, speculation has also been rife that his health is failing. But all this does not seem to have deterred his will to continue in the hot seat. On Tuesday, the ruling Golkar Party yet again nominated Suharto to seek re-election for the presidential seat, making it the seventh time running for Suharto.
India to take up Chetia issue with Bangladesh
Indian Prime Minister I K Gujral, who is on a state trip to Bangladesh, has stated that he would discuss the deportation of wanted ULFA leader Anoop Chetia with the Bangladeshi premier. Gujral will also hold a separate meeting with the Pakistani premier and will also attend a three-nation business meet for enhancing economic ties.
