Cong dumps Rao in first list
Congress Working Committee (CWC) members Sharad Pawar, K Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, Madhav Rao Scindia and Tariq Anwar are among the 87 Congress leaders - all of them MPs in the dissolved Lok Sabha - whom the party today included in its first list of candidates for the forthcoming general elections. However, P V Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister who was elected in 1996 from Behrampur in Orissa, does not figure in the list.

BJP baffled by the "foreign hand"
Sonia Gandhi's entry into politics has caught the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in two minds. The BJP is now unsure as to whether to ignore Sonia's entry or to launch an all-out attack on her. BJP strategists are closely monitoring the response to Sonia's campaign before deciding on its future course of action.

Cong plans special package for Muslims
The Congress is now making an overt attempt at luring the Muslim voters into its fold. The party has, to this end, included a special minority package in its election propaganda. The highlights of the package, likely to be announced later, are a separate Ministry for Minority Affairs and a Minority Education Commission.

UF allies jostle for seats in UP
The stage seems to be set for a "battle royale" between the constituents of the United Front over the seat-sharing arrangements in Uttar Pradesh. While the Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav has shown a reluctance to give more than 10 seats to the other parties, the Janata Dal has staked a claim for at least 20 seats. Failure of the seat-sharing talks will also see the Janata Dal contesting all the seats in UP.
