  Sonia's demand is bid to stall Bofors probe: PM
At a massive rally organised by the United Front at the Nizam College grounds in Hyderabad, Prime Minister I K Gujral said that Sonia Gandhi's demand to make public the Bofors papers was borne out of a deliberate attempt to prevent further investigation into the multi-crore defence scandal.
  Jakhar may be denied ticket to sideline Rao
The Congress leadership is seriously contemplating withdrawal of Balram Jakhar's candidature from Bikaner in order to place P V Narasimha Rao's neck on the block. The entire exercise of hastily withdrawing the list of 16 candidates has raised many political eyebrows.

BJD divided over drive with BJP
The top leadership of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is divided over the first phase of joint campaign with its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched on January 15 last. It is learnt that the leaders of the BJD opposed the joint campaign with the BJP even before the seat arrangements between the two allies were formalised.
Sonia draws flak for sparing DMK
Jayalalitha has made a frontal attack against Sonia Gandhi's election campaign, insinuating that there was something "fishy" between the DMK-TMC combine and Congress. Attacking Sonia, she said that the audience at the Sriperumbudur rally were disappointed with her speech since she did not attack those who abetted and encouraged the assassins (the DMK) and their ally (TMC).

BSP's poll launch on thin note
Ex-chief minister Mayawati in her eight minutes sppech at a thinly-attended rally in Kanpur said that the forthcoming parliamentary polls will be a prelude to Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Rally was aimed chiefly at the electorate of the adjourning constituencies of Kanpur City and Bilhaur (Kanpur Dehat).
Congmen join NC, may bag J&K tickets
The Congress received a severe jolt in Jammu & Kashmir when two of its top leaders, a former member of Parliament Janak Raj Gupta and former minister R S Chib, joined Dr Farooq Abdullah's ruling National Conference in the state. The two leaders are being tipped to be the NC candidates in the Jammu region.
