BJP rewards defectors with LS nominations
Several new members of the BJP, ex-MPs who defected from other parties, were rewarded yesterday when the BJP included their names in its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. The most prominent name among the defectors was that of Sanjay Singh who will be contesting the Amethi seat. The BJP also announced candidates from West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, thus warning their prospective partners in the respective seats that their procrastination in forging electoral trucks will not be tolerated further.
  UF discord in TN too
Even as the existing clash with the Samajwadi Party over seat-sharing arrangements in Uttar Pradesh lies unresolved comes another setback for the United Front, this time in Tamil Nadu. Now, it is the left parties -- CPI(M) and the CPI -- who have made life miserable for the Front. The reason for the ire of the Left parties is the seat allocation formula under which they have both got just one seat each while all the other seats have been bagged by the DMK.

EC bans Opinion and Exit polls for 2 weeks
The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday released an order banning media organisations from publishing or broadcasting opinion polls for two weeks from February 14 onwards. The EC also placed a like ban on exit polls, effective from February 16 to February 28. The EC took this step, stating that the release of these polls could unduly influence the poll results.
Basu in the fray for PM; it's official now
West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu has finally come out in the open with his aspiration to ascend to the Prime Ministership of the country. In an interview published in Ganashakti, the Bengali mouthpiece of his party, the CPI(M), Basu claimed that he was willing to accept the hot seat, if he was asked to. He, however, tactfully stated that the decision to make him the Prime Minister lay in the hands of the United Front.

Kesri's mid-air crisis; halfway rally to Ranchi and back
The much-hyped public reunion between Congress president Sitaram Kesri and Sonia Gandhi at a meeting scheduled at Ranchi in Bihar yesterday. The meet fizzled out when Kesri failed to make the venue. Although conflicting tales have been floated to justify Kesri's absence, the prevailing opinion was that Kesri staged an act in order to avoid sharing a platform with Sonia.
Jalappa joins Congress, may get LS ticket
The recent trend of defections from the Congress to other parties was bucked yesterday by the Union textiles minister R L Jalappa. In a major move, Jalappa resigned from the Union Cabinet and also quit from his party, the Janata Dal, to join the Congress. Jalappa attributed his decision to irreconciliable differences with JD leader, H D Deve Gowda.
