Kothari, Asim win CALCUTTA: Former world champion Manoj Kothari displayed good form to prevail over G Khanwani while another strong contender Mohammed Asim routed Aditya Goenka in their opening league matches of the Independence Cup invitation billiards tournament here today.
Kothari played a controlled game to demolish Khanwani 719-517 in a Group A contest, while Asim had no difficulty in brushing aside the challenge of Goenka 802-415 in a Group B match. Asim compiled breaks of 110, 91, 82, 81.
Arjun leads
CALCUTTA: Title aspirant Arjun Singh did justice to his star billing by registering a lead in the third round of the East India junior golf championship at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here today.
Arjun, who had a good round of 75 during the day, has culled a total score of 219, nine points ahead of Ashok Kumar.
Billiards camp
CALCUTTA: The second billiards coaching camp in preparation for the forthcomingAsian Games in Bangkok would be held in Bangalore from February 5-19.
While 12 players have been shortlisted for billiards, ten players have been called for the snooker camp, according to the president of the Karnataka Billiards and Snooker Association, Arvind Savur.
Narayan director
MUMBAI: Olympian and ex-Tata Sports Club custodian S S Narayan has been roped in as a director of the city's first professional football club, the Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC).
The 1956 (Melbourne) and 1960 (Rome) Olympics stalwart joined the club, which has become the second professional football club in India after KBL FC Kochin, as its 12th director, a release stated today.
Mumbai win title
MUMBAI: Defending champions, Mumbai University emerged victorious in the All-India Inter-University Squash championship at Jaipur recently. In the final, played on January 24, Mumbai defeated Devi Ahilya University, Indore 3-1. The Mumbai lads were short by one player and had to carry out the trip at theirown expense.
