King Bennet leaps to new meet record

K Ramesh Mathew
Kochi, Jan 29: The third day of the 13th Junior National athletics meet at the Maharaja's College ground here belonged to Andhra Pradesh's 18-year-old triple jumper, Bennet K Raja. After his first two shaky jumps, Bennet, a product of the Indian Army's talent-hunt scheme, came back to his own and was full of fire later, which saw him rewrite Praveen's meet record -- 14.53 metres -- with a 14.75m in his fifth leap.

There were two more records. Kerala sprinter R Sukumari (under-18), who in the process bagged a double, rewrote her own meet record (57.73) with a new timing of 57.39s in the 400m. Yoginder Chavan (under-16, Haryana) eclipsed the two-year-old mark set by Chandrasekhar (SZ, 4012 points), scoring 4096 in the pentathlon.

After the third day's proceedings, Kerala are leading with 216.50 points, followed by Karnataka (141) and Maharashtra (109).
