Don't overstep your limits, UP Speaker tells EC
The conflict between the UP government and the Election Commission (EC) has now taken another turn. In a frontal attack on the EC, the UP Assembly Speaker Kesri Nath Tripathi has criticised the EC's interference into the functioning of the UP Legislature. Tripathi cited Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh's directives against an anti-encroachment drive in Varanasi and withdrawal of poll-related cases as examples of the EC's transgression.
  ICICI also hikes PLR
The tight money policy announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently saw its fallout on another of the country's premier lending institutions. Toeing the line of IDBI and IFCI, the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) yesterday hiked its prime lending rate (PLR). ICICI increased its long term PLR by 1% to 14.50% and its medium term PLR by 2% to 14.25%. ICICI's variable short term PLR was also hiked to 14%.

Tytler's out of race for Lok Sabha polls
Congress heavyweight Jagdish Tytler's political star seems to be on the wane. Tytler, who had filed his nomination as a covering candidate from the Sadar seat, was left in the lurch yesterday when his papers were rejected. Tytler's attempts at contacting Congress leaders Sitaram Kesri and Sonia Gandhi also were in vain. Tytler, however, ruled out any possibility of his contesting the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate.

Cabinet approves drug price cut
The department of pharmaceuticals on Wednesday got a boost in its ongoing tussle with the pharmaceutical industry. The Union cabinet endorsed the department's proposals to levy price cuts on ranitidine and rifampicin, in spite of the objections to these cuts by Union minister M Arunachalam. The Cabinet also appointed a one-man panel to probe into Arunachalam's objections to the cuts.
TV jokes hits Clinton below the belt
His sexual escapades have made US President Bill Clinton the target of many jokes in all kinds of media in the US. Ever since news of his alleged affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky broke on last Wednesday, late night TV shows, comedy clubs and the ubiquitous World WideWeb are saturated with a stream of salacious jokes that are circulating faster and are more damaging to the Presidency than any El Nino current.
