Pollock rocks Aussies, Taylor steadfast
South African Shaun Pollock destroyed Australia's batting with a record-breaking blitz of seven for 78 on the third day of the third and final Test on a furnace-like Sunday. Pollock's feats ensured that Australia were left struggling at 327 at stumps, with captain Mark Taylor unbeaten on 157 and tailender Stuart McGill on 2. South Africa had earlier made 517 in their first innings.

England put together their second best batting performance in three weeks to beat New Zealand and lift the under-19 World Cup trophy at the Wanderers in Johannesburg yesterday. But it needed a brilliant 107 from their Essex teenage batting star, Man-of-the-Match Stephen Peters to help England to an easy seven-wicket triumph over New Zealand with four overs remaining.

Ruslan Chagaev stripped of title, gold goes to Felix Savon
Ruslan Chagaev, controversial winner of the heavyweight title at last year's World Amateur Boxing Championships, has been stripped of his title after being disqualified for being an ineligible professional. Cuba's Felix Savon, who was beaten by Chagaev in the final of the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, on October 25, will be awarded the gold medal -- giving him his sixth world heavyweight title.

Srinath topples top seed Hilpert
Prahlad Srinath of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu's Sai Jayalakshmi survived some torrid moments before emerging champions in the All-India Open tennis Championships at the Century Club courts in Bangalore on yesterday. Srinath overpowered top seed Marcus Hilpert of Germany 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in 2 hours and 26 minutes. Jayalakshmi defeated Archana 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (8-6).

Star Supreme claims McDowell Derby
Star Supreme, owned by Dr MAM Ramaswamy and saddled by Dallas Todywalla, with the assistance of jockey J Fortune reduced The McDowell Indian Derby, to a one horse race, claiming Rs 26,78,964 and the trophy valued Rs 75,000. The estimated crowd of 75,000 turned up enthusiastically to have a glimpse of the national event.
