Indian youngest Olympic luge contestant

NAGANO: Indian teenager Shiva Keshavan is the centre of attention at the Olympic luge track. Luge (akin to downhill sledge sliding) is not exactly associated with the subcontinent and Keshavan needs special permission from the world governing body Fil to compete here because India doesn't have a luge federation.

Now he is the first Indian and at 16 the youngest ever Olympic luge athlete.

Keshavan is the son of an Indian father and an Italian mother.

Games threat

NAGANO: A possible terrorist threat to disrupt the closing ceremony of the Winter Games was revealed here today.

News of the menace comes only 36 hours after a mortar attack at Tokyo's Narita International Airport. Games' officials say the threat had been sent by e-mail. "Feb 22 could become a very bad day," said the message.

The message, in English, was reportedly signed in Arabic. The word Iraq also appeared in the text.

Tourney scrapped

BANGKOK:Thailand has scrapped its premier badminton tournament this year in bid to save hard currency during the economic crisis, the Thai badminton association said in a statement today.

The association said they had decided to call off the Thai Open, a world Grand Prix tournament, because of costs ($ 160,000) associated with the event.

The tournament was to have taken place in July.
