Of a (wo)man, wife and a kidnap

NEW DELHI, Feb 4: The kidnapping of Deepak and Anu Alhawat, a young couple, by the bride's brother would pass off as an ordinary incident, but for the fact that Deepak is Deepika Kalra, who underwent a series of sex-change operations to become a man.

The couple was abducted on Tuesday from Sirsa in Haryana only to be rescued by the police.

According to the police, Anu's brother Sanjay stormed into Deepak's house, accompanied by several gun-wielding men, and reportedly threatened his family before kidnapping the couple.

The couple's friends say that Sanjay has been harassing Deepak and Anu ever since their marriage. He filed an FIR accusing the couple of stealing jewellery worth Rs 5,500 from his house.

But, the duo secured a bail from the Chandigarh High Court.

Deepak met Anu at the Government National College in Sirsa 12 years ago. And ever since Anu has been his ``first girl friend''. When he lost his left arm in a road accident in 1991, he used the compensation to get his sex changed at theSutlej Hospital in Ludhiana.

Since their marriage Deepak and Anu have been staying in Delhi as they feared that they would be ostracised in their hometown, Sirsa.
