N Zealand down Zimbabwe
Career-best bowling figures by Daniel Vettori and a fine all-round performance by Chris Harris helped New Zealand to a comfortable 40-run win against Zimbabwe in the first of their One-Day International cricket series yesterday. In reply to New Zealand's 248 for seven, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 208 in the 49th over.

Becker marks return with fluent victory
Back from a relaxing few months away from the men's tennis circuit, German veteran Boris Becker cruised past unseeded Fredrik Bergh of Sweden on Tuesday in a first-round match of the $400,000 ATP Croatian indoors tennis tournament. Becker, who hasn't played a match since dropping out early from a tournament in Stockholm last November, won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Slow track for Port-of-Spain Test
To the relief of everyone involved, the pitch for the second cricket Test between West Indies and England has been described as "low and slow." Bryan Davis, the pitch supervisor at Queen's Park Oval where the match starts on Thursday, says the pitch will be in stark contrast to the unpredictable one ruled unfit at Sabina Park in the abandoned first Test.

Umpires escape "stumping" by SA cricketer
An unnamed South African cricketer, who allegedly used a stump to batter the door of the umpires' room after the Test draw against Australia in Adelaide escaped punishment yesterday. The South African player made a one-inch dent in the door in an act apparently sparked by frustration when the umpires ruled Mark Waugh not out when he walked onto his stumps on the final day of the third Test.
