Varkey back in reckoning

CHENNAI: Sabu Varkey has been included in the preparatory camp for the forthcoming Test series against Pakistan. The news was conveyed to Sabu, who had been out of the team for over a season, yesterday by Karnataka State Hockey Association Secretary K Krishnamurthy.

Sabu made his international debut during the tour of South Africa in 1993 and followed it up with a splendid performance at the Hiroshima Asia Cup in 1994. He went on to play in the Hiroshima Asiad and the Sydney World Cup before being omitted.

GNDU triumph

AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar bagged the All-India Inter-University (women) volleyball championship, getting past Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam 14-16, 12-15, 15-8, 15-0 and 15-7 here at the University Sports Complex on Friday.

After losing the first two sets, GND University girls rallied superbly and won the last three in a row to clinch the issue.

Calicut University beat Punjab University, Chandigarh in theloser's plate final to finish third.

Sunita to run

MUMBAI: India's former Asian marathon champion, Sunita Godara, is to take part in the Sixth Asian Championship in Thailand on February 8. It will be the 5th marathon race for the 38-year-old Sunita who won the third edition of the Asian event, a release from Bangkok-based Amateur Athletics Association of Thailand stated on Friday.
