  Rush of Ram as Advani begins UP poll drive from Faizabad
Barely 7 km from the site where the Babri Masjid once stood, to slogans of Jai Sri Ram, BJP President L K Advani began his election campaign in Uttar Pradesh yesterday. The moderate turnout at the venue gave Advani a warm response with many cheers and pro-temple slogans being raised. Advani, in his speech, also urged Sonia Gandhi to reveal the names of the people involved in the Bofors scam.
  Assam may have two phase poll
Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta yesterday said that he had convinced the Election Commission to consider holding the Lok Sabha polls in Assam in two phases. The move comes in the wake of the fact that Assam has only one-tenth of the required 678 military companies at its disposal. Mahanta claimed that a deferred schedule would allow the Government to make optimum use of the military to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

Iraq sets conditions for inspection
Iraq has agreed in principle to inspection of all its suspect sites, including those it terms "presidential,". Iraqi officials, however, stipulated that the consent was subject to the condition that the UN embargo is lifted one month after the inspections. Iraq also stated that the inspections should be carried out "only once."
Govy okays Rs 325 cr package to salvage IA
Decks have been cleared for the financial revival of the domestic carrier, Indian Airlines (I-A). The ministries of civil aviation and finance have agreed upon a Rs 325-crore package for I-A's restructuring. Of this Rs 125 crore will go towards fresh equity infusion in the airline with the remaining Rs 200 crore as compensation for grounding A 300 planes. The money would be allocated in two phases with the equity coming in the first phase.

Clinton tightens noose around Saddam, rushes more marines
The situation in the Middle East has taken a more serious turn. US President Bill Clinton has sent 2,200 marines on warships to the Persian Gulf to strengthen the already formidable US military presence in the region. This move comes even as key foreign countries -- Russia, France and China -- stepped up their resistance to the use of force against Iraq.
Clinton's secy says he had private moments with Monica
US President Bill Clinton has suffered another blow in the scandal pertaining to his alleged affair with ex-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Clinton's personal secretary Bettie Currie told investigators that Clinton did spend time alone with Monica Lewinsky. Currie also turned over the gifts given by Clinton to Lewinsky. The White House has, however, denied the fresh allegations by Currie who claimed that Clinton had told Currie to lie about the episode.
