Afghanistan quake leaves 4000 dead
A powerful earthquake jolted Afghanistan's remote northeast this week, killing as many as 4,000 people, an Afghan official said yesterday in the first casualty reports to emerge. The quake hit the city of Rustaq, 280 km north of the Afghan capital, Kabul, destroying 15,000 homes. Tremors of varying intensity reportedly rocked the mountainous area for hours afterwards.

Clinton tightens noose around Saddam, rushes more marines
The situation in the Middle East has taken a more serious turn. US President Bill Clinton has sent 2,200 marines on warships to the Persian Gulf to strengthen the already formidable US military presence in the region. This move comes even as key foreign countries -- Russia, France and China -- stepped up their resistance to the use of force against Iraq.

Media tightens belt, pulls up its socks for winter has just began
With advertising spend growing at only 22% in 1996-97, compared to a phenomenal 35% in 1994, belts are being tightened and socks are being pulled up all across the media world. Even according to the most liberal estimates, the ad spend this year will be only Rs 5,100 crore, about Rs 1,000 crore less than the expectation. Even of this, not all the money will be in the bag.

Pollution-hit coastal hot-spots spotted
In the laborious process of monitoring the sea wealth of the country's coastal waters, the central research agencies have identified six centres as "hot-spots" vulnerable to pollution. The hot spots identified include Mumbai, Kochi, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Visakhapatnam. The research was conducted under the Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction (COMP) programme, funded by the Department of Ocean Development.
