Cancer-afflicted boxer gets gunned down in hospital

WASHINGTON: A professional boxer with a promising career who recently was diagnosed with cancer died of gunshot wounds in the lobby of the hospital where he was being treated for the illness.

The gunman waited in the lobby of the Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Institute until the victim, Reuben Bell, 24, an outpatient at the institute, arrived about early Thursday. The gunman then opened fire, police said. The hospital on Friday offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman.

Paes-Bhupathi start favourites

DUBAI: Top ranking Indian doubles duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are billed star attractions at the $1 million Dubai Tennis Open to be held here from February nine to 15. The duo, who lost in the semi-finals in the Australian Open this year and were runners-up in the US Open, are the favourites.

Komen sets 3,000 m world mark

BUDAPEST: DanielKomen of Kenya set a new world indoors record of seven minutes 24.90 seconds in the men's 3,000 metres at the Samsung Cup International Competition in Budapest.

It was the second time in a week the record had been smashed.

Last Sunday, Ethopian Haile Gebrselassie clocked seven minutes 26.14 seconds in Stuttgart, Germany. Komen is the world record holder in two miles and 5,000 metres and world champion in the 5,000 metres.

TT world champ Tanaka dead

TOKYO: Two-time table tennis world champion Toshiaki Tanaka died at a hospital in Fukuoka, south-western Japan, family members said on Saturday. He was 62. Tanaka, who died on Friday was known for his devastating smash, dubbed the `invincible hydrogen bomb smash,' clinched the national titles for three years in a row beginning in 1954, reports Kyodo. Tanaka won the world singles title in 1955 and again in 1957.

Maradona proposes, coach refuses

SAO PAULO: Diego Maradona has offered to play for Santos, but the coach doesn'twant him. The aging Argentine soccer star surprised Brazilians by offering to sign a risk contract with Pele's old club, under which he would get paid only for the games he played.

``No thanks,'' said coach Emerson Leao.``Maradona has no condition to play. Today he is an ex-athlete,'' Leao added.
