Dialogue between FPs, psychiatrists to dispel myths
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, February 23: In an attempt to dispel myths about mental illness, mental health professionals (MHPs) in the city have shed their isolation as professionals and sought the aid of Family Practitioners (FPs). They have started a dialogue with FPs so that the fear of consulting an MHP is taken care of. A group of such professionals released a book at the Nehru Science Centre on Sunday.Titled From Mental Illness to Mental Health, the book, edited by social psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty, contains mock dialogues in which the FP reveals his problems of advising a visit to a MHP. The stigma of visiting a psychiatrist results in FPs losing patients, and the book depicts some candid experiences. It also discusses issues like the option of alternative medicine as opposed to quackery and should an FP shift a patient displaying symptoms of mental illness shifted to a hospital without his consent.
