  Clearing the track
The Supreme Court has struck down a petition against the Karnataka High Court's ecological clearance to the long-pending Cogentrix power project. This is all to the good. The project has already cleared enough environmental hurdles for it never to have reason to face another.
Kashmir, the institutional problem Madalvee Inamdar
Why is Kashmir so high on the security agenda of India and Pakistan and what does Kashmir mean to them? India clearly places a much lower priority on the remote mountain terrain seized by China in 1962 than on Kashmir. The conflict over Kashmir has become a source of threat to India as it invites intervention as well as attack.

Shameful disrespect
It is hardly unusual for electoral law to be breached with impunity in India. But it is certainly unusual for the initiative to come from the Election Commission itself. In this election, the government has defied its own principles in Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.
Charisma and clout
Widows of deceased or slain charismatic leaders can greatly succeed in the public life of the countries of this region. It is a uniquely subcontinental phenomenon. Weep and grieve over your dead or assassinated husbands, and their wives or even their mistresses can make it politically.
