  Kalyan wins test of nerves and numbers
Curtains came down on the six-day-long political drama in Uttar Pradesh today with BJP leader Kalyan Singh defeating Opposition-backed Loktantrik Congress candidate Jagdambika Pal in the game of numbers. In the end, it was 225 ticks (3) for Kalyan, 196 for Pal -- and no damage to the Assembly furniture.
  Cong, UDP stake claim in Meghalaya
With the Congress and its rival, the United Democratic Party (UDF), staking claim before Governor M M Jacob on Thursday to form the government, the political drama in the state has deepened. The Congress led by S C Marak, deputy Congress Legislature Party leader and former chief minister D D Lapang and Pradesh Congress chief and Rajya Sabha MP O L Nongtdu met Jacob in Raj Bhavan today and staked claim to form the government.

It may not be a saffron sweep in Mumbai
In an election dominated by figures, sums are not just adding up to a Sena-BJP alliance sweep like last elections. Despite a massive show of strength at the historic Shivaji Park on Wednesday, the alliance is unlikely to repeat its performance of the 1996 elections in the metropolis, which goes to polls on Saturday.
Poll security beefed up
Central and para-military forces will join the 38,000-strong Mumbai police in their unprecedented security arranged for patrol duty of sensitive areas during the Lok Sabha elections scheduled on the 28th. The BSF and CRPF have been summoned for the task.

Blow to Sharif Govt as ANP severs ties
The Nawaz Sharif government in Pakistan has received a jolt after its nine-year-old alliance with Awami National Party (ANP) snapped over renaming the North West Frontier Province. The ANP decision yesterday to sever its ties with the one-year-old Sharif ministry was prompted by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League's (PML) refusal to accede to its demand of renaming the province Pukhtoonkhwa.
Thackeray winds up campaign with appeal for Dalit support
Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray wound up his campaign for General elections, 1998, with a meeting at Ghatla village, Chembur, in support of BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan. In his second rally in as many days, Thackeray issued a call to the Dalits to unite with the saffron alliance.
