The United Front remained divided on extending support to Congress in ministry formation at the Centre in the face of stiff resistance from Telugu Desam. Differences arose at a UF core committee meeting yesterday when TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu strongly rejected the idea of the Front supporting a Congress-led government to keep the BJP out.

The Congress has put off its crucial parliamentary party meeting by several days with indications that it may not be held before March 12. Apparently, Sonia Gandhi, who will practically decide who will be the Congress Parliamentary Party head, is not keen to make a choice before the nature of the CPP leader's job becomes clear.

Virbhadra Govt takes over amid drama
Virbhadra Singh was yesterday sworn in as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for a fourth term, after Governor V S Rama Devi invited him to form his government rejecting the Bharatiya Janata Party's claim to power. He has been given ten days to prove his majority on the floor of the House.
ICL to move MoF on Raasi
The promoters of India Cements have rushed to New Delhi to rope in the support of the finance ministry officials for their takeover bid on the Secunderabad-based Raasi Cements. On the other hand, Raasi Cements has started sending feelers to a Mumbai-based cement giant to rescue them by entering the scene as a white knight.

Annan asked to appoint Russian as deputy of arms team for Iraq
Russia is mounting pressure on Kofi Annan to name a Russian to a top post in the commission which performs arms inspections in Iraq, diplomatic sources have revealed. Such a move would significantly increase Moscow's influence over efforts to determine whether Iraq has complied with UN orders to destroy long-range missiles and mass destruction weapons.
India choke after fluent start
