  Kesri foils CWC ambush
Upset at the move to make Sonia Gandhi chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), party president Sitaram Kesri yesterday cancelled a scheduled CWC meeting and summoned Ghulam Nabi Azad for an explanation on what was happening "behind his back". The CWC meeting was cancelled when Kesri abruptly ordered that the meeting was off and would be held over the next two days.
  Marak confident as floor test draws near
With a neck and neck tussle on between a Congress coalition headed by Chief Minister Salseng C Marak and United Parliamentary Forum (UPF) led by B B Lyngdoh, it is still not clear as to who will win the trial of strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly on Tuesday. A confident Marak, however, said that he would win the trial of strength with the support of 30 MLAs.

Jaswant for finance, Advani may get home
L K Advani and Jaswant Singh are emerging as frontrunners for the home and finance portfolios respectively as the BJP gets down to the business of government formation in anticipation of the call from Rashtrapati Bhavan later this week. However, the proposed Vajpayee cabinet will take final shape only after the ongoing negotiations with Jayalalitha, Mamata Banerjee and Chandrababu Naidu to join the government reach a conclusion.
Jaya's support to BJP unconditional
AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha has made it clear that her party would extend unconditional support to a BJP-led government at the Centre but ruled out joining it. After her discussion with BJP leaders, she said she had left it to her allies about their participation in the BJP coalition but said they had decided to toe her line.

Shekhar's help sought to breath new life into Dal
Resentment in the Orissa unit of the Janata Dal following the party's nation-wide debacle in the just concluded Lok Sabha election has taken the form of an appeal to former prime minister Chandra Shekhar for the revival of the party. Two senior Janata Dal leaders Nalinikanta Mohanty and Prafulla yesterday urged Shekhar to make a last ditch effort to revive the party.
BJP, Mamata pledge to oust CPM from WB
Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders yesterday firmly resolved to fight against CPM "atrocities" and put an "end to the days of misrule" in West Bengal as the two parties held preliminary talks on jointly contesting the forthcoming panchayat polls in the state.
