Fierce lobbying by the swadeshi hardliners forced Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's hand on Jaswant Singh, resulting in his last-minute exclusion from the Union Cabinet yesterday. Vajpayee reluctantly decided in the early hours of the morning to leave Singh out of his cabinet for the time being.

CBI revives two Mayawati cases
Just a day before the BJP Government was sworn in at the Centre, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) activated two major cases against former UP Chief Minister Mayawati. In a floating fire pump case, a case of abuse of official power and criminal misconduct was filed against her and senior State officials on Wednesday.
Graft charges false: Joshi
Embattled Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi yesterday observed that the corruption charges levelled against him and his Cabinet colleagues were not only politically motivated, but were false and based on incorrect information.

Swamy's crucial vote may go against BJP
Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has reiterated that he would seek the permission of AIADMK-led front leader J Jayalalitha to vote according to his conscience when Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee seeks the vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha.
Govt opts for vote-on-account
With the Union budget for 1998-99 financial year delayed, the BJP led coalition government will take a vote-on-account next week to meet essential government expenditure for a four-month period. Immediately after the swearing in, the new Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee told newsmen at Rashtrapati Bhavan that he would prefer a vote-on-account over an interim budget.
