  Jaswant Singh on Plan panel, Prabhat is Cabinet secretary
In two of its first major decisions, the Vajpayee Government today appointed BJP leader Jaswant Singh as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Prabhat Kumar as the new Cabinet Secretary. Jaswant Singh, who was in the running for the post of Finance Minister but refused the offer on the ground of his defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, will take over from Madhu Dandavate who has resigned.
  BJP ministers to counter southern allies, build party
The BJP may have appeared generous when it accommodated its allies in the two-tier ministry on Thursday. But it quietly applied the principle of checks-and-balances in selecting its own ministers from the southern States, keeping in mind its long-term political interests.

ED-frozen funds freed to pay I-T
The Bombay High Court has, in an order, recently defrozen a sum of money to be paid towards tax under the Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme, 1997, by a company which was under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. The division bench comprising the Chief Justice, Justice M B Shah and Justice A Y Sakhare have however held that the clearance of the amount will be subject to the FERA investigation.
Khurana to break ice over Speaker issue
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana has been authorised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to conduct negotiations with the Congress and the United Front to evolve a consensus on the Speaker's post. Khurana was scheduled to meet former prime minister I K Gujral in a bid to break the deadlock on the issue.

14 ministers in Patnaik Government resign
At least 14 of the 28 ministers of the J B Patnaik government in Orissa have resigned, owning moral responsibility for the party's debacle in the recent Lok Sabha elections in the state. Biswal said that the consensus view in Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, attended by several MLAs and ministers, was that all the ministers should resign to give a free hand to the Chief Minister to reshuffle his cabinet.
US eases restrictions on Cuba
While retaining its punishing, three-decade-old economic embargo on Cuba, the United States has ordered a relaxation in some of its restrictions on the Communist state apparently at the behest of Pope John Paul who paid a historic visit to its capital Havana in January to the utter surprise of Castro's detractors in the US.
