Decks cleared for Sangma's re-election
The chances of P A Sangma emerging as the consensus choice for Speaker brightened with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) indicating that it was not keen on the post going to its own partyman. BJP leader L K Advani is also said to have called on Leader of the Opposition Sharad Pawar yesterday but the details of their meeting were not known.

CM will stay, so will Thackeray
After sending shock waves through the rank and file of the party with his virtual indictment of Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray yesterday spread confusion by declaring that Manohar Joshi would continue to be Chief Minister. In a related decision Thackeray also agreed to the request of his partymen to put off his proposed political sanyas.

Orissa wary of yet-to-be-born state
Despite the BJP-led alliance's assertion that the proposed new State of Vananchal would be limited to the geographical boundaries of Bihar, the issue has snowballed into a raging controversy in Orissa. The issue rocked the State Assembly where the Opposition Janata Dal accused the Biju Janata Dal of having compromised the State's interests in exchange for a few berths in the central ministry.

TN alleges bias in BJP stand on Cauvery issue
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has stated that the BJP's national agenda on the Cauvery Waters dispute, promising a National Water Policy, articulated only the Karnataka government's stand in the problem. He claimed that the agenda made no mention about Tamil Nadu's stand on the issue.
