  Tornado fury in Orissa, WB
A tornado with a windspeed of 500 km per hour left 105 people dead, 500 missing and 1,100 injured, while 8,000 others were rendered homeless on both sides of the West Bengal Orissa-border amidst torrential rain yesterday. Massive rescue operations were underway with senior officials, medical teams, ambulance and fire brigade personnel on the scene with the rains holding off.
  Dhumal finally takes over as Himachal CM
Powered by a switch of loyalty by an Independent MLA, Prem Kumar Dhumal was yesterday installed as the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh at the head of a nine-member BJP-led ministry ending weeks of political stalemate. The two-tier ministry was sworn in a day after Centre rejected a recommendation for imposition of President's rule in the state

RBI mops up Rs 1,900 crore
The Reserve Bank of India's "operation rollback" triggered frenzied activities in money, forex markets on Tuesday with banks rushing to buy government securities (gilts) from the RBI sale window. The forward premium on dollar also continued to move southwards. The RBI mopped up Rs 1,900 crore through the sale window.
Saifuddin Soz blasts Farooq
The National Conference is facing a revolt from within its parliamentary party with one of its MPs, Saifuddin Soz, attacking party chief Farooq Abdullah for his decision to support the BJP government. Soz, in a sharp statement yesterday, described Farooq's decision as "politics of compromise" and hinted that he might have to part ways with him.

ANZ Grindlays cuts PLR, others to follow
Foreign banks have started slashing their prime lending rates (PLR) following the reduction in bank rate and cash reserve ratio (CRR). ANZ Grindlays Bank cut its prime lending rate (PLR) by 100 basis points to 17% yesterday. ANZ Grindlays is the first foreign bank to cut its PLR following the RBI's decision to slash the CRR to 10%.
Witnesses in 1984 riots case being threatened, says CBI
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special public prosecutor R M Tewari today alleged that two prosecution witnesses, who testified on Monday in the 1984 riots case against former Outer Delhi Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and 10 others, were being threatened. Tewari said he had been approached by one of the accused to "settle" the case.
