Barbs make Balayogi squirm in hot seat
For GMC Balayogi, the newly-elected Speaker of the twelfth Lok Sabha, it was literally a baptism by fire yesterday. Elevated to the hot seat in a last minute bargain between his party chief, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and the BJP, Balayogi found himself the target of thinly disguised taunts from an irate Opposition.

Dhumal finally takes over as Himachal CM

Saifuddin Soz blasts Farooq
The National Conference is facing a revolt from within its parliamentary party with one of its MPs, Saifuddin Soz, attacking party chief Farooq Abdullah for his decision to support the BJP government. Soz, in a sharp statement yesterday, described Farooq's decision as "politics of compromise" and hinted that he might have to part ways with him.

Rent bill: CM calls urgent meet
Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting today to consider its options following the Supreme Court's refusal today to extend the current Bombay Rent Control Act by another nine months. Following the court's directive in December last year, the Maharashtra government had filed a review petition seeking an extension beyond the March 31 deadline to formulate a new legislation.
