Yeltsin stops short of backing Chernomyrdin for President
Russian President Boris Yeltsin yesterday declined to give Viktor Chernomyrdin his unqualified backing for Presidential elections in 2000, saying only that the decision by the ousted prime minister to run "doesn't deviate from the general sphere of our policies". Yeltsin said he would not call Chernomyrdin his designated successor because that was for "the people to decide".

Zia calls for boycott of Indian goods
Bangladesh's main opposition figure Begum Khaleda Zia has called upon the people to boycott Indian goods to save domestic industrial factories from closing down. Begum Zia, chief of the biggest opposition group, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), gave the anti-Indian call yesterday at a political rally in the border town of Nalitabari, 320 km northwest of Dhaka.

Inspectors finish touring four of Saddam's eight palaces
UN arms experts have reportedly finished inspecting four of the eight palace compounds of Iraqi President Saddam Hussain under the accord reached last month with the United Nations, according to a senior UN diplomat, Jayantha Dhanapala. He, however, gave few details about what was seen.

28 killed as air force plane crashes into Peru shantytown
An air force plane plunged into a Peruvian shantytown yesterday, killing 28 civilian passengers as it crashed into a drainage canal only yards from hundreds of homes. Authorities said that as many as 20 other passengers were injured in the crash.
