  Sonia to crack the whip soon
A crackdown of sorts appears to be imminent in the Congress after the April 6 special All India Congress Committee (AICC) session where party president Sonia Gandhi's election is to be ratified.Sonia hinted as much when asked when she would take disciplinary action. At least three State units -- Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa -- are in the grip of widespread dissidence.
  Naidu spells out TDP's plans
Telugu Desam party president N Chandrababu Naidu almost set the party's agenda for the next Assembly elections by laying emphasis on the social sector and on acquiring a pro-poor image for the government. Naidu outlined the course of action to be followed by the party and the government in the next few months at a meeting of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party yesterday.

Kushabhau likely to succeed Advani as BJP chief
Kushabhau Thakre has emerged as the frontrunner for the post of next BJP president. And, in a move which signals the party's intentions of paying greater emphasis on organisational matters, K N Govindacharya is tipped to become the organising secretary, a post which is being revived after a gap over two decades.
RBI cuts WMA, hikes interest rate
The government will pay more dearly for fiscal indiscipline following the RBI move to reduce the limit for ways and means advances (WMA) available to the government to bridge any mismatches between expenditure and receipts. It has also jacked up the interest rate on WMA by a wide margin by linking it to the bank rate instead of 91-day treasury bills.

JD loses I-T exemption
The Janata Dal will no longer be eligible for exemption granted under section 13A of the Income Tax act. The party has been slapped with six tax notices totalling Rs 32 crore and its auditors say they will be challenging the action. This is the highest tax demand ever served on a political party in India.
Aussies tumble to Sachin's jumble
India won the first one-dayer of the Pepsi triangular one-day series when they defeated Australia by 41 runs at Madras yesterday. India, who won the toss and opted to bat first, made 309 for 5 in their alloted 50 overs. Australia in reply were bowled out for 268 with Sachin Tendulkar claiming a career-best haul of 5 wickets for 32 runs.
