India failed to capitalise on a fine century by opener Saurav Ganguly (105) and the rousing start he provided with Sachin Tendulkar (40) and finished 220 for nine in 50 overs against New Zealand in the opening match of the three-nation Coca Cola Cup cricket tournament at the Sharjah Stadium. Ganguly played a sensible innings scoring 105 runs off 140 balls.
Dupuis ends Indian challenge
Anthony Dupuis, the 25-year-old Frenchman, toppled the top-seed and hot favourite Leander Paes in the semifinal 7-6 (5), 6-4, to set up a title clash with the second seed Peter Tramacchi. The Australian snuffed out Jan Krejci also in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (5), in the IPCL Cup Challenger.
SA score thumping win
South Africa beat Pakistan by seven wickets in their triangular series one-day international at Centurion Park yesterday. Set a paltry target of 145, South Africa reached the total in 35.3 overs. Jacques Kallis remained unbeaten on 79.
Mark makes a Hughes difference
Veteran striker Mark Hughes needed just six minutes to send Chelsea into the Cup Winners' Cup finals as his goal completed a great comeback by the English side who beat Italy's Vicenza 3-1 for a 3-2 aggregate victory. In the May 13 final in Stockholm, Chelsea will meet VFB Stuttgart of Germany, who beat Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 in Russia for a 3-1 aggregate win.
Anuja Tere shoots down two records
Mumbai-based senior clerk with the Railways Anuja Tere not only defended her title in the 10m Air Rifle event of the 41st National Shooting Championship, but also shot down two records at the Dr Karni Singh Range. Jaspal Rana, continuing his good form in the championship, accounted for another individual gold in 10m Air Pistol in the Open category, scoring 679.7.
Five Indians make the cut
Amritinder Singh led the bunch of five Indians past the cut with a brilliant five under 67 for the second round in the $400,000 Volvo China Open. Besides Amritinder, now placed joint 13th with a total of six-under 138, Arjun Singh, Arjun Atwal, Vivek Bhandari and Indian Open winner Feroz Ali made the cut at the half-way mark in Shanghai.
