Oppn stages morchas over riots panel report

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 21: Youth Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists organised rasta rokos and morchas to demand that the state government table the Srikrishna Commission report on the communal riots without delay.

Over 500 Youth Congress activists staged a rasta roko at the Sion hospital junction to protest the delay in tabling the report. The activists were arrested by the Sion police and later released on bail.

Said city Youth Congress president Charan Singh Sapra, today's agitation was the launch of a series of rasta rokos, corner meets and dharnas every week throughout Mumbai until the government decided to table the report.

``We want to increase people's awareness that the Shiv Sena is shielding those responsible for the 1993 riots,'' Said Sapra. A signature campaign would also be organised to gauge the public mood regarding the Shiv Sena-BJP government's delaying tactics, he said.

Similarly, 76 CPI (M) activists were arrested by the Azad Maidan police for trying to organise amorcha to Mantralaya from Azad Maidan, in view of the High Court's ban on morchas.

They charged the government of hatching a conspiracy to shield the Sena-BJP leaders guilty of incitement and participation in the riots. The demonstrators were led by party leaders K L Bajaj, Mahendra Singh, Kishore Theckedath, S K Rege, Dinkar Yadav and others.
