  A committee to checkmate Jaya
Shaken by AIADMK chief Jayalalitha's sudden demands and resultant damage to the month-long Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government and the coalition, a coordination committee on the lines of the United Front is being set up at the Centre. The committee will meet on April 26 and 27, BJP leader and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Jaswant Singh said yesterday.
  Now, she targets SUN
The AIADMK continued to put pressure on the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government by coming out with a fresh demand yesterday. This time it has sought action against SUN TV, owned by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's nephew and former Union Minister Murasoli Maran's family. The AIADMK has alleged that SUN TV was "sabotaging" the functioning of Doordarshan.

CPI, JD may lose national party status
The Trinamool Congress, the Lok Shakti, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and ten other political parties have been upgraded to state party status while the Communist Party of India, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Janata Dal are in danger of losing their position as national parties following their performance in the 1998 elections. After a post-poll review, the EC has recognised 13 political parties, awarding them the status of state parties.
Buta to file FIR against Mahajan
Buta Singh, who was dropped from the Vajpayee ministry as Communication Minister, yesterday said he would lodge a complaint with the police against the prime minister's political adviser Pramod Mahajan for allegedly threatening him and his family members. Singh said he would file an FIR today against Mahajan whom he accused of threatening his family members with dire consequences if he did not quit the Union Cabinet

Bengal BJP to take on Mamata
Their brief honeymoon having turned bitter, the West Bengal BJP will send a formal complaint to L K Advani today against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. Vice-president of the State BJP, Muzaffar Khan, said that the party will send the complaint to Advani, detailing how the Mamata abused Tapan Sikdar, president of the BJP's Bengal unit.
Gunny bags with currency notes recovered from Bihar minister
Income-Tax officials yesterday seized currency notes stuffed in six gunny bags during a major swoop in Bihar and other states. The officials raided 65 residential and business premises belonging to 25 persons, including Bihar minister for road construction Illyas Hussain, a Rashtriya Janata Dal MP and a party MLA.
