  Yeltsin, Communists head for showdown
Russian Leftists headed for a showdown with the Kremlin tonight with the Communist Party declaring to vote against President Boris Yeltsin's nominee Sergei Kiriyenko as Prime Minister in a decisive vote in the state Duma tomorrow.
  Special court to try blasts cases in TN soon: CM
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday said that a special court would be set up in consultation with the High Court to try the February 14 serial blasts-related cases. Tabling a White Paper in the Assembly on the blasts, Karunanidhi said the State government did not receive any information from the Centre or its agencies about the presence of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) activists in Tamil Nadu or about their involvement in the blasts.

Govt in a bind over Naga ceasefire
By next Friday insurgents in Nagaland could well be re-loading their rifles. It is on this day (April 30) the security forces' ceasefire with them comes to an end and there is still no move in sight for its renewal. The Union Home Ministry is dithering on whether to continue the ceasefire for another three months.
Arms for villagers to fight J&K ultras
The Government will impart arms training and provide weapons to the people, who have migrated from various villages in Jij Patwar of Reasi tehsil in the wake of the recent massacre of 26 people by militants at village Prankote.

Bill Gates donates 1.7 m to UN Fund
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has offered a $1.7 million grant to the UN Population Fund for programmes in developing states, the UN agency announced on Wednesday. The bulk of the funds, or $1.5 million, will go to a programme established in 1994 to promote the exchange of technology and experience among developing nations. The countries involved in the scheme currently include Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Thailand, and Zimbabwe.
Ex- Greek President Caramanlis dies at 91
Former Greek President Constantin Caramanlis died early on Thursday in an Athens hospital at the age of 91, his private secretary Petros Moliviatis said. Caramanlis, who led Greece from the end of the military `colonels' regime in 1974, serving as president from 1980 to 1985 and from 1990 to 1995, had been admitted to hospital with a respiratory infection on April 7.
